While learning Portuguese, I discovered that goodbye is spelled “tchau” instead of “ciao” like in most other romance languages. For some reason, my mind was blown and I decided use it for my first hand lettering exercise.
When researching typefaces and styles, I decided to model it after 1950s Brazilian graphic design. I sourced the inspiration for the text from several vintage bossanova and festival posters. I used variants of the traditional colors of the Brazilian flag and added a soft, warm-toned background to add to the design’s mid-century feel.
